but the myth that Software RAID is always bad is purely a misunderstanding based on Windows's Storage Spaces being garbage and then applying that one bad product to a concept of RAID which is completely wrong. It rarely makes sense for the SMB market because SMBs rarely understand RAID and need hand holding that hardware RAID can provide.
Invest in a dedicated RAID controller than supports your SATA drives and use that to handle the RAID. So when your VM locks up, you're able to just power it off and restart it without restarting the host? All the hardware is available again without the hard restart? That sounds more like a problem with that VM rather than a hardware issue. It sounds interesting, and 30 years ago I might have called it fun. You're passing multiple video cards and sound cards? You also talk about 'bare metal' pass-through of some drives (by which I guess you mean you haven't used a VHD file. I have enough trouble passing a USB flash drive through for OS installation. Since you obviously can afford 2 or 3 systems, this project is just for the learning aspect correct? I mean, you've introduced a whole lot of complexity, which is impacting your ability to get actual work done.

The virtualized OS need to be licensed but it doesn't need to be an Enterprise license They are hosting a virtualized Windows OS and needs ro be licensed regardless. How come? The virtualization has nothing to do with access locally or remotely. Thank you in advance for any help offered, Does anyone have any suggestions and even better point me in the direction of a guide which can walk me through this, as I have a basic knowledge of virtualization but have been unsuccessful in the pass with the above linux systems crashing. I need a system that will run my photo rig consistently without crashing and as close to bear metal as possible as I need the speed of the NVME to process pictures and potentially videos.

This runs effortlessly and has never crashed.ģ) The 3rd Windows 10 VM has nothing passed through and is used to run my CCTV system which records to a 3TB Vdisk which is the synched to google drive. Every time it crashes, I have to reboot the whole server as the NVME drive is no longer recognised by UnRaid, which is a real pain and is the main reason for me looking at other alternatives.Ģ) Wife's Windows 10 machine is mainly for surfing the net, with the following pass through AMD 5450, built in audio and 1 x Samsung 500MB SSD. This machine is unstable and would crash occasionally which is now becoming more frequent. I run 2 x 32 inch monitors at 4K from the AMD card. So far I have been able to create 3 x windows 10 VMs:ġ) I am a photographer and on 1 VM I have passed through the AMD W7100 GPU, SB card & NVME drive which has windows 10 installed to run as bare metal with 32 GB of RAM which has 3TB virtual drive which I store my image files in a folder which is synched to Amazon drive. Over the last year I have been using UnRaid for my home system, it has been flaky all the way through, but I have struggled to virtualize in the past with KVM using Ubuntu and Fedora.
